Brian Ligon is somewhat of a modern-day renaissance man; his paths and passions in life have been diverse and numerous, but all seem to create the perfect balance in his life. Not only an accomplished musician, a former college basketball standout, as a forward at Butler University, he’s also a practicing dentist.

Brian started playing piano at the age of five, soon after beginning formal lessons and performing recitals. Sports, music, and studying have always been important aspects of his life. After years of studying piano, in middle school, he began learning how to play alto saxophone, it was then he says, “sports began to demand more of my time.” Music was always significant; in many ways it was his first business. “My parents gifted me my first Yamaha keyboard to start making music for schoolmates who wanted to rap and sing. I would write music and sell it to local aspiring artists; when I realized I was able to make some money from it, that’s when I started to teach myself what producing music was really all about.”

Graduating with a degree in Recording Industry Studies in 2007, Brian had already formed relationships in the Tampa Bay music scene through his internship with Big3 Studios under Jim “Pinky” Beeman. He says he was, “introduced to the intricacies of mixing and mastering.” He’s maintained a close working relationship with Beeman and Big3 ever since; returning to complete production on Nowhere But Here in 2016. Brian has also been involved with music promotions working closely with Mel Smith, Senior Vice President of Promotion & Marketing for Young Money/Cash Money Records. From 2006-2015 in the promotions department his focus was assisting in special events and shows during the beginning of the Young Money empire.

After graduating from Butler University and going on to obtain his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College in 2011, Brian followed into the family business of dentistry, operating a successful practice in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Brian’s day job hasn’t stopped him from continuing his passions with music. “Outside of being a dentist, making and playing music helps me maintain balance in my life.” Citing influences such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder; he says the duo of Michael Jackson & Quincy Jones is “without a doubt” his biggest influence in the area of production.

That continued passion for music has resulted in the release of Nowhere But Here, Brian’s debut album. It’s a reflection of Brian’s vast musical influences and the culmination of his constant desire to further better himself as a musician and a person. “Nowhere But Here gives some insight to who Brian Ligon is, the man behind the music and my sound.”
